Commission: Public Notice
In accordance with Federal Regulations, the DETC Accrediting Commission provides written notice of its accrediting decisions to appropriate accrediting organizations and state agencies, the public, and the U.S. Department of Education.

iTeachUS
Effective February 14, 2013, the DETC Accrediting Commission denied accreditation to iteachU.S., Denton, TX, for the following reasons:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that iteachU.S. failed to demonstrate compliance with specified elements of DETC standards for using acceptable methods of assigning credit hours to curricula work; fully documenting student achievement, including clear evidence of graduation rates; supervising of faculty; using budgeting and strategic plans; having an acceptable tuition refund policy and other areas where full compliance with the DETC standards was not shown.
In accordance with DETC’s D.3. Notification and Information Sharing, the Commission is hereby providing written notice to the public of this final adverse action within 24 hours of its notice to the institution.
iteachU.S. is afforded an opportunity to submit for public viewing and also conveyed to the U.S. Secretary of Education and other relevant authorities on DETC’s website a brief statement as to the Commission’s decision to deny accreditation. iteachU.S. has until February 28, 2013 to submit its official comments.
On February 22, 2013, iteachU.S. submitted the following comments regarding the Commission’s decision:
iteachU.S. appreciates the opportunity to have been reviewed for accreditation by DETC. While we were unsuccessful in obtaining accreditation at this time, the accreditation process was nonetheless beneficial to our program. iteachU.S. will incorporate the suggestions of the Accrediting Commission as part of our commitment to be one of the nation’s best educator preparation programs.
iteachU.S. will be seeking accreditation in 2014.
Teacher Education University
Effective February 13, 2013, the DETC Accrediting Commission withdrew accreditation from Teacher Education University, Winter Park, FL, for the following reasons:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that Teacher Education University did not demonstrate that it met the following accrediting standards concerning: use of appropriate technology; maintenance of student records; student achievement and outcomes assessment; documentation of financial stability; and teach-out plans.
In accordance with DETC’s D.3. Notification and Information Sharing, the Commission is hereby providing written notice to the public of this final adverse action within 24 hours of its notice to the institution.
Teacher Education University is afforded an opportunity to submit for public viewing and also conveyed to the U.S. Secretary of Education and other relevant authorities on DETC’s website a brief statement as to the Commission’s decision to withdraw accreditation from the University. The University has until February 27, 2013 to submit its official comments.
On February 26, 2013, Teacher Education University submitted the following comments regarding the Commission’s decision:
Teacher Education University is honored to have earned initial accreditation from DETC in January 2008. The accreditation process provided faculty and staff an opportunity to provide quality academic programs and student services. As the standards and requirements became more rigorous, Teacher Education University strived to meet the spirit of each standard. We would like to thank DETC staff, Commission, and evaluators who have provided guidance and support over the past 6 years. We look forward to re-applying for DETC accreditation in 2014.
Yorktown University
Effective August 22, 2012, the DETC Accrediting Commission withdrew accreditation from Yorktown University, Denver, CO, for the following reason:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that Yorktown University failed to demonstrate compliance with Standards IX, which requires that an “institution can document that it is financially responsible and is in control of its financial matters. The institution can demonstrate that it will continue to operate as a going concern for the benefit of students, and is capable of producing accurate and timely financial information.”
In accordance with DETC’s D.3. Notification and Information Sharing, the Commission is hereby providing written notice to the public of this final adverse action within 24 hours of its notice to the institution.
Yorktown University is afforded an opportunity to submit for public viewing and also conveyed to the U.S. Secretary of Education and other relevant authorities on DETC’s website a brief statement as to the Commission’s decision to withdraw accreditation from the University. The University has until September 5, 2012 to submit its official comments.
Kona University
Effective July 19, 2012, the DETC Accrediting Commission withdrew accreditation from Kona University, Kailu-Kona, HI, for the following reason:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that Kona University failed to demonstrate compliance with Standards IX, which requires that an “institution can document that it is financially responsible and is in control of its financial matters. The institution can demonstrate that it will continue to operate as a going concern for the benefit of students, and is capable of producing accurate and timely financial information.”
In accordance with DETC’s D.3. Notification and Information Sharing, the Commission is hereby providing written notice to the public of this final adverse action within 24 hours of its notice to the institution.
Kona University is afforded an opportunity to submit for public viewing and also conveyed to the U.S. Secretary of Education and other relevant authorities on DETC’s website a brief statement as to the Commission’s decision to withdraw accreditation from the University. The University has until August 2, 2012 to submit its official comments.
Update: No comments were received from the University by the August 2, 2012 deadline.
Perelandra College
Effective July 17, 2012, the DETC Accrediting Commission withdrew accreditation from Perelandra College, La Mesa, CA, for the following reason:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that Perelandra College failed to demonstrate compliance with Standards IX, which require that an “institution can document that it is financially responsible and is in control of its financial matters. The institution can demonstrate that it will continue to operate as a going concern for the benefit of students, and is capable of producing accurate and timely financial information.”
In accordance with DETC’s D.3. Notification and Information Sharing, the Commission is hereby providing written notice to the public of this final adverse action within 24 hours of its notice to the institution.
Perelandra College is afforded an opportunity to submit for public viewing and also conveyed to the U.S. Secretary of Education and other relevant authorities on DETC’s website a brief statement as to the Commission’s decision to withdraw accreditation from the College. The College has until July 31, 2012 to submit its official comments.
Update: No comments were received from the College by the July 31, 2012 deadline.
California Institute of Arts and Technology
The California Institute of Arts and Technology, San Diego, CA was denied initial accreditation effective January 20, 2012 for the following reason:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that California Institute of Arts and Technologies did not meet DETC Eligibility Criteria that requires an institution to demonstrate two years of continuous years of operations as a distance education institution.
On February 22, 2012, the California Institute of Arts and Technology submitted the following comments regarding the Commission’s decision:
California Institute of Arts & Technology is honored to been reviewed for accreditation by DETC and thank the Commission for challenging us to improve. We are especially pleased that CIAT’s programs, faculty and overall procedures met DETC's challenging academic standards. It is disappointing that the Commissioners decided that CIAT did not convincingly demonstrate meeting DETC’s Eligibility Criteria and IX.E. Demonstrated Operations, however, we understand that in today’s regulatory environment, the burden of proof that lies upon the institution is greater than ever.
We sincerely thank the Commission, DETC, the evaluators and visiting team for their efforts and will continue to strive toward becoming an accredited member of the Accrediting Commission of the distance Education and Training Council (DETC).
Hawthorn University
Hawthorn University, Whitethorn, CA was denied initial accreditation effective January 20, 2012 for the following reasons:
The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that Hawthorn University did not demonstrate that it met accrediting standards concerning Comprehensive Curriculum, Satisfactory graduation rates, and appropriately qualified faculty. The institution did not demonstrate that it was in compliance with DETC’s minimum tuition refund policy.
On February 27, 2012, Hawthorn University submitted the following comments regarding the Commission’s decision:
Since its inception in 2002, Hawthorn University has provided innovative online education resulting in over 100 graduates presently working in the field of holistic nutrition. We are extremely grateful that the DETC has recognized our many strengths and for offering recommendations in areas that they deemed needed some improvement. Hawthorn graciously accepted and implemented all of the proposed suggestions and required actions recommended by the Examining Committee which was substantiated in our response to the Chair’s Report dated September 1, 2011. Also, additional evidence of our compliance was provided in our Follow-Up Report dated November 1, 2011. With all due deference to the Commission, our documents provide verification of compliance with all of the DETC standards. As such, we are petitioning for a waiver of the twelve month waiting period to reapply and respectfully request that the Commission review and accept our petition and give further consideration to the evidence presented in our previous reports. We are confident that the Commission will find us worthy of recognition as we continue to meet all standards.
The University of Atlanta
New enrollments are not being accepted. DETC accreditation applies solely to students studying with the Norcross, GA-based institution, and is for "teach-out purposes." DETC accreditation expires June 30, 2013.
